The AMA was created by Dick Clark in 1973 to compete with the Grammys after the move of that year’s show to Nashville, Tennessee led to CBS picking up the Grammy telecasts after its first two in 1971 and 1972 were broadcast on ABC. Nominations are presented in eight categories: Pop/Rock, Country, Soul/Rhythm & Blues, Rap/Hip Hop, Latin Music, Alternative Music, Contemporary Inspirational and Adult Contemporary categories. While the Grammys are awarded based on votes by members of the entertainment industry, the AMAs are determined by a poll of music buyers, and as a result is more of a representative of public opinion.

For this year 2009, American Music Award or AMA ‘09 transpired last night at Nokia Theater, Los Angeles CA. Taylor Swift and Michael Jackson were among the biggest winners for this year’d AMA.

She traveled to four continents and been to numerous countries such as Russia, Bolivia, Brazil, Puerto Rico, Italy, Spain, France, Ukraine, Argentina, Dominican Republic, El Salvador, Cuba, Vietnam and UAE. She also had a number of trips to USA. The six major sponsors of the show are BSC Swimwaer, Carlos Alberto, Diamond Nexus Labs, Farouk Systems, New York Film Academy and Nina Footwear. Donald Trump and Phil Gurin remain as the executive producer of the pageant.

Here in the Philippines, the much-awaited Miss Universe 2009 will be broadcasted live on ABS-CBN on August 24 at 9:30 a.m. A primetime telecast will be aired the same day via Velvet (SkyCable channel 53) at 8 p.m.

“Twilight” threw off strong competitors like the following movies; “The Dark Knight”, “High School Musical 3: Senior Year”, “Iron Man” and “Slumdog Millionaire”. Aside from winning Best Movie, the Catherine Hardwicke-directed movie also hauled in kudos for Kristen Stewart and Robert Pattinson. Both young artist were hailed Best Female Performance and Breakthrough Performance Male respectively. The two leading actors also shared the Best Kiss prize. Such a great night for these two folks.

Meanwhile, it was quite embarassing perhaps for Kristen to have her award drop accidentally. But she was able to manage saying what she needs to say in her speech. It’s all okay girl. You are the winner anyway!
